How Long Does Pet Insurance Reimbursement Take?
Reimbursement speed is the thing nobody checks before buying and everybody cares about afterward. The insurers publish figures, some of them precise, and those figures are worth knowing. But the gap between “most claims in 2 days” and the three weeks a first claim can take isn’t the insurer dragging its feet. It’s almost always paperwork, and that part you control.
What each insurer says about its own turnaround
These are the insurers’ own statements, taken from their pages on 2026-10-23, not measurements of ours. “Processed” means a decision was made; the money follows.
| Insurer | Insurer’s own statement | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Healthy Paws | “Most claims are processed in 2 days” | Coverage page and FAQ |
| Figo | “Most claims close in just 3 working days” on average (its Illinois page says 2.6) | Dog insurance and Illinois pages |
| Lemonade | 50% of eligible claims paid instantly, the rest typically within 5 days | FAQ |
| Pets Best | Direct deposit “5-7 days” after processing | FAQ |
| Embrace | “Over 90% of claims paid in less than 10 days” | Dog insurance page |
| Trupanion | No figure published on the pages we checked | |
| ASPCA | No figure published on the pages we checked | |
| Spot | No official figure; only customer testimonials on the pages we checked |
Read the words carefully. “Most”, “typically”, and “over 90%” all leave room for the claim that isn’t most. And the measures don’t line up: Healthy Paws counts to processing, Pets Best counts from processing, Lemonade describes payment. None of them is wrong; they’re describing different stretches of the same timeline.
Processing time versus the day the money lands
A claim passes through three stages, and the published figures usually cover only the middle one. First the insurer has to have everything: the itemized invoice, the visit notes, and your pet’s medical history. Then it decides, which is the “processed in 2 days” part. Then it pays, by direct deposit or check, which Pets Best says takes 5 to 7 days after the decision. So an owner reading “2 days” and expecting money in two days is measuring the wrong stage. Figo’s “close” and Embrace’s “paid” sit at different points on that line too. If you want to compare, ask each insurer one question in the same words: from the day you have my complete claim, how many days until the deposit lands?
Lemonade’s instant payment on half of eligible claims is the exception, and by its own description it applies to half, not all. The other half are the ones that take up to the typical five days.
Why the first claim is the slow one
A first claim is slow at every insurer for the same reason: the insurer doesn’t yet know your pet. It has to decide whether the condition is pre-existing, and for that it needs the full history, often from a previous vet. Lemonade asks for 12.5 months of records; Figo reviews the 12 months before enrollment plus the waiting period; the others want the same kind of file. If those records weren’t sent at enrollment, the first claim is where they get chased, and vets send records on their own schedule. A week is not unusual.
The same thing happens on the first claim for any new condition later in the policy’s life, though usually faster because the history is already on file. A claim for a dog with three years of records and a clear invoice is the “2 days” claim. A claim for a dog enrolled three weeks ago is not. How to file a claim shows what the insurer needs at each step.
Filing deadlines that run the other way
There’s a clock on you as well. Lemonade requires claims within 180 days of treatment, 90 days in Texas; other insurers set their own windows, and a late claim is a denied one. Filing the week of the visit, while the clinic can still find the invoice and the notes in two minutes, is also simply faster, because the insurer’s follow-up request gets answered the same day instead of after a week of phone tag.
Direct pay is the other way around the wait. Trupanion can pay its share at checkout where the hospital is set up for VetDirect Pay, and Pets Best and Healthy Paws can route the reimbursement to the clinic. Pet insurance that pays the vet directly explains what each program does, and what still comes out of your pocket at the desk.
Cutting a two-week claim to a few days
Four habits do most of the work. Send the complete medical history to the insurer at enrollment, before any claim, and ask whether they’ll review it and tell you what counts as pre-existing. Ask the clinic for an itemized invoice marked paid, plus the visit notes, before you leave; a summary receipt restarts the clock. Submit through the app the same day. And on the first claim, call the previous vet yourself and ask them to send records to the insurer, rather than waiting for the insurer’s request to work its way through.
What won’t speed things up is a bigger claim or a chase on day three. The figures above describe clean claims with records on file, and the fastest way to be in that group is to build the file before you need it. With that done, the difference between a 2-day insurer and a 10-day insurer is real but small; without it, every insurer is a three-week insurer. The reimbursement guide covers what the eventual payment will be, and the reimbursement calculator puts a figure on it.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Lemonade take to pay a pet insurance claim?
Lemonade says half of eligible claims are paid instantly and the rest typically within 5 days. Claims must be filed within 180 days of treatment, or 90 days in Texas.
How long does Embrace take to process a claim?
Embrace's own figure is that over 90% of claims are paid in less than 10 days. As at any insurer, a claim that needs medical records the insurer doesn't yet have takes longer.
How long does Healthy Paws take to reimburse?
Healthy Paws states that most claims are processed in 2 days. Processing is the decision; the deposit or check follows, and a first claim can take longer while records are collected.
Why is my pet insurance claim taking so long?
Usually records. A first claim, a new condition, or a vet that hasn't sent the full history forces the insurer to request it, and the clock runs while it waits. An invoice that isn't itemized or marked paid has the same effect.
