Trupanion Waiting Period (2026): 5 Days, 30 Days, or 12 Days
Trupanion’s waiting period is short on one side and long on the other: 5 days for injuries, 30 days for illnesses, “in most states”. There’s no separate wait for knees or hips, which sets it apart from the six-month orthopedic waits at Embrace and Figo. The complication is that Trupanion’s plan page also describes a single 12-day period for both injuries and illnesses, with no effective date, and California shows three policy versions depending on when you enrolled. So the right number depends on your state and your enrollment date, and the policy document is the only place it’s settled.
Trupanion’s 5-day and 30-day waits, with the 12-day change pending
| What | Trupanion’s waiting period | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Accidents and injuries | 5 days in most states | Source: Trupanion’s pages, checked 2025-11-15. A single 12-day period is announced, no effective date |
| Illnesses | 30 days in most states | Source: Trupanion’s pages, checked 2025-11-15. Same 12-day announcement applies |
| Orthopedic or knee | No separate wait; illness wait applies | Source: Trupanion’s pages, checked 2025-11-15 |
The 5 and 30 appear on both Trupanion’s coverage-start FAQ and its how pet insurance works guide. The 12-day statement comes from Trupanion’s plan page. Trupanion and Healthy Paws block automated reading, so these figures come from archived snapshots rather than a live read; the date above is the oldest among the facts on this page.
Exam Day, Go Home Day, Adoption Day: Trupanion’s three waivers
Trupanion is unusual in offering a waiver that removes the waiting periods rather than shortening them. The Exam Day Offer applies when the policy is activated within 24 hours of a vet exam. The Go Home Day Offer and Adoption Day Offer do the same when it’s activated within 24 hours of a pet going home from a breeder, shelter, or rescue. All three are available for pets up to 14.
The catch is participation. The offer is activated through the clinic or shelter, so it only works where that clinic or shelter takes part, and it has to happen on the day. An owner who hears about it a week after the exam has missed it. If you’re planning to insure a new puppy, the practical move is to ask the breeder or shelter whether they activate Trupanion’s offer before the pickup date, and to ask your vet the same before the first appointment. The general waiver list compares this with the exam-based waivers other insurers use.
Signs during Trupanion’s waiting period and the California policy wording
Trupanion’s California policy defines a pre-existing condition as any condition with vet advice, treatment, or signs or symptoms before the effective date or during any waiting period. That last clause is what the waiting period really does. A limp on day 3, or vomiting on day 20, isn’t just unpaid for that visit; it can become a condition the policy never covers. Trupanion’s deductible is per condition for the life of the pet, so a condition classified as pre-existing is one you’d never reach a deductible on at all.
The California wording is the one we can quote. For other states the general rule is the same across the industry, and the policy document controls. The pre-existing conditions guide explains how insurers read the records to decide.
How fast Trupanion pays: no published figure, but VetDirect Pay
Searches for “Trupanion claim time” don’t have a number to land on. Trupanion’s pages we checked don’t publish a claim-turnaround figure, unlike Lemonade or Embrace, so we can’t give one. What Trupanion does publish is VetDirect Pay: where a hospital is set up for it, Trupanion pays its 90% share to the vet at checkout, and you pay only your deductible and the remaining 10%. For a visit at a participating hospital there’s no reimbursement wait at all, which is a different and arguably better answer than a fast turnaround. Pet insurance that pays the vet directly explains how the three direct-pay programs differ.
For a claim submitted the ordinary way, the usual factors apply: whether the vet records are already on file, whether this is the first claim on the policy (the first one triggers the records review), and whether the condition raises a pre-existing question. How long reimbursement takes walks through each.
Trupanion’s state versions and where to read more
Trupanion’s California notice lists different policy versions for enrollments before 12/27/2024, between 12/27/2024 and 3/27/2025, and on or after 3/27/2025, and the state’s law bars any accident wait and caps illness waits at 30 days. Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have the same model-act rules, so the 5-day accident figure can’t apply in those four states. The California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania pages cover what each statute requires. The full Trupanion review covers the deductible structure, the unlimited payouts, and what’s excluded, and the waiting period guide explains why every insurer has one.
Terms vary by state and policy version. This page reflects Trupanion’s published terms from archived snapshots dated 2025-11-15 and later, and the policy document for your state is what binds.
Frequently asked questions
How long is Trupanion's waiting period?
Five days for injuries and 30 days for illnesses in most states, per Trupanion's FAQ and pet owner guide. There's no separate orthopedic wait. Trupanion's plan page also describes a single 12-day period for everything, without saying when it takes effect, so check your own policy document.
Does Trupanion have a waiting period for accidents?
Yes, 5 days in most states on the pages we checked. In California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, state law bars any accident waiting period, so a policy sold there can't apply the 5 days.
Can Trupanion's waiting period be waived?
Yes. Trupanion's Exam Day Offer, Go Home Day Offer, and Adoption Day Offer waive the waiting periods when the policy is activated within 24 hours of a vet exam or of the pet going home, for pets up to 14. The clinic or shelter has to take part, so ask before the visit.
How long does Trupanion take to pay a claim?
Trupanion doesn't publish a claim-turnaround figure on the pages we checked. Where a hospital is set up for VetDirect Pay, Trupanion can pay its share at checkout, which removes the reimbursement wait entirely for that visit.
