Pet Insurance With No Waiting Period: What Actually Exists

Quick answer No insurer we checked sells illness coverage with no waiting period. What exists is accident cover with no wait (Lemonade, and every policy sold in California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania by statute), illness waits capped at 30 days in those four states, and waivers at Trupanion, Embrace, Pets Best, Figo, and Healthy Paws that shorten or remove the wait after a vet exam.

Type “pet insurance no waiting period” into a search box and you’ll get pages promising exactly that. Read the policies and the promise shrinks. Every accident and illness policy we checked makes you wait for illness cover, and most make you wait for accidents too. What’s genuinely available is narrower and more useful than the headline: a zero-day accident wait at one insurer, four states that ban accident waits outright, and a set of waivers that can collapse the longer waits to almost nothing if you act in the first days of the policy.

Where a zero-day wait genuinely exists

Lemonade is the one insurer among the eight whose published terms say accident cover “kicks in immediately”. Illness still waits 14 days and orthopedic conditions 30, so the zero applies to a broken leg or a swallowed sock, not to a tumor or an ear infection. Lemonade’s review has the rest of its terms.

The other route to a zero-day accident wait is geography. California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have each enacted a version of the NAIC Pet Insurance Model Act, and all four bar any waiting period for accidents on policies sold there. They also cap waiting periods for illnesses and non-accident orthopedic conditions at 30 days and require the insurer to offer a way to waive that wait after a veterinary exam. So an insurer whose standard form says six months for cruciate ligaments can’t apply that figure to a dog in Columbus or Tampa.

That’s as far as the honest version of “no waiting period” goes. Nobody we checked sells accident and illness cover where a disease diagnosed on day one is paid for. The general waiting-period guide explains why: without a wait, you could buy a policy in the vet’s parking lot.

Eight insurers’ waits side by side

Published waiting periods, from each insurer’s own pages checked on 2026-10-23 (Trupanion and Healthy Paws via archived snapshots). Terms vary by state; the policy document for your state controls.

InsurerAccidentsIllnessOrthopedic
Trupanion5 days “in most states”30 daysNo separate wait; a single 12-day period for everything has been announced, no effective date
LemonadeNone14 days30 days
Healthy Paws15 days (none in model-act states)15 days15 days, plus 12 months for hip dysplasia (30 days in model-act states)
Embrace2 days14 days6 months for dogs, 14 days for cats; waivable to 14 days
Pets Best3 days on the standard form (none listed on the newer California form)14 days6 months for cruciate events (30 days on the newer California form)
Figo1 day on current pages (5 on the California disclosure)14 days6 months; waiver available in the first 30 days
ASPCA14 days14 days14 days for ligament and knee
Spot14 days14 days14 days for ligament and knee

Two patterns stand out. The insurers with the shortest accident waits tend to have the longest orthopedic waits, and the two with a flat 14 days for everything, ASPCA and Spot, give up the quick accident start in exchange for no six-month knee wait. Which trade suits you depends on whether you own a breed prone to cruciate tears or a young dog that eats things.

Exam-day activations and orthopedic report cards

Waivers are where a wait can really disappear, and they’re all time-limited. Trupanion’s Exam Day Offer, Go Home Day Offer, and Adoption Day Offer waive the waiting periods when the policy is activated within 24 hours of a vet exam, or of a pet going home from a breeder, shelter, or rescue, for pets up to 14. It depends on the clinic or shelter participating, so ask before the appointment rather than after.

Embrace’s Orthopedic Report Card works differently. The standard dog orthopedic wait is six months; a vet orthopedic exam after purchase cuts it to 14 days, or to the exam date if that comes later. Anything the exam notes becomes pre-existing, which is the price of the shortcut. Figo offers an Orthopedic Conditions waiver in the first 30 days through its app. Pets Best’s standard form lets a vet exam between 3 days before and 7 days after the effective date reduce or waive its waits, with the form returned within 30 days of the exam. And Healthy Paws, in the model-act states, makes its 15-day illness and orthopedic wait waivable with a complete clinical exam.

None of these are automatic. Each has a window measured in days, and most owners who miss it miss it because they didn’t know it existed.

Searching for “no waiting period” in your state

A lot of these searches carry a state name, and the state is the right thing to check. In California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, the law does three things for every policy sold: no accident wait, a 30-day ceiling on illness and non-accident orthopedic waits, and a required waiver after a vet exam. Pennsylvania’s statute also says waiting periods must be disclosed clearly before purchase, and California’s requires coverage to take effect no later than the second consecutive day after a complete application and payment.

In Texas, New York, Illinois, Georgia, North Carolina, and Michigan, there’s no statute on waiting periods, so the policy form is the only rule. New York’s legislature passed a bill in 2025 that the governor vetoed; Illinois has a bill that cleared its House in 2026 but isn’t law. A “no waiting period” search in those states finds Lemonade’s accident term and the insurer waivers, nothing more.

Preventive add-ons that start right away

If what you need covered this week is a vaccine, a spay, or a dental cleaning, the waiting period question changes. Those sit in preventive or wellness add-ons, which pay a scheduled amount and often start almost at once. ASPCA says its preventive care add-on has no waiting period, and Spot’s starts the next day. Lemonade sells preventive packages too, including a puppy and kitten package with spay or neuter and vaccines, but the pages we checked don’t state when they begin. Insurance versus a wellness plan explains why those add-ons are priced like a payment plan rather than insurance.

The condition that shows up on day three

Whatever the wait, the thing to fear isn’t the wait itself. It’s what happens inside it. Trupanion’s California policy, Figo’s California disclosure, and Spot’s sample policy all treat a condition that shows signs during the waiting period as pre-existing, and Lemonade spells out that cruciate signs during its 30-day orthopedic wait make the knee pre-existing. Pennsylvania’s statute defines pre-existing the same way, with the waiting period included. So a 14-day wait isn’t 14 days of no cover; it’s 14 days during which anything that appears can be excluded for the life of the policy, as the pre-existing conditions guide describes.

That’s why the shortest wait isn’t always the right buy. A policy you took out two months before the limp beats a zero-day policy bought the morning after. If you’re reading this with a sick pet, can you get pet insurance after a diagnosis gives the honest answer, and if the question is a surgery already booked, buying before surgery walks through what a new policy would and wouldn’t pay.

Terms checked on 2026-10-23; Trupanion and Healthy Paws figures come from archived snapshots dated between 2025-01-17 and 2026-09-22. Waiting periods vary by state and policy version, so confirm the figure in your own policy document before relying on it.

Each insurer’s numbers also have their own short page: Trupanion, Lemonade, Healthy Paws, Embrace, Pets Best, Figo, ASPCA, Spot.

Frequently asked questions

Is there pet insurance with no waiting period for illness?

Not among the eight insurers we checked. The shortest published illness wait is 14 days (Lemonade, Embrace, Pets Best, Figo, ASPCA, Spot); Healthy Paws lists 15 and Trupanion 30 in most states. Trupanion's exam-day and adoption-day offers can waive the wait if the policy is activated within 24 hours of the visit.

Which pet insurance has no waiting period for accidents?

Lemonade states accident cover kicks in immediately. Figo advertises one day, Embrace two, and Pets Best three on its standard form. In California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, state law bars any accident waiting period on any policy.

Can a pet insurance waiting period be waived?

Sometimes. Trupanion waives waits when a policy is activated within 24 hours of a vet exam or adoption. Embrace cuts its six-month dog orthopedic wait to 14 days after an Orthopedic Report Card exam, Figo offers an orthopedic waiver in the first 30 days, and Pets Best can reduce or waive waits with an exam 3 days before to 7 days after the start date. Four states require a waiver option by law.

What is the shortest waiting period for pet insurance?

Zero days for accidents at Lemonade, and zero by statute in California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. For illness, 14 days is the shortest standard wait we found, and the four model-act states cap illness and orthopedic waits at 30 days.
